When the first streamliner set a nonstop record between Denver and Chicago, sleek and stainless and built for speed, it took our breath away. It was advanced, and glamorous, too. Optimism on wheels.

In practically no time there were streamlined automobiles and radios and electric fans and bathroom scales; entire buildings were streamlined.
